Description
Petitioners
Community of the Lowy of Pevensey, members of the king's port of Hastings.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The community of the Lowy of Pevensey, members of the king's port of Hastings, who are making a ship and a quarter of another ship for the king's service, state that although they are quit, through a charter of the king's father, confirmed by the king, of all manner of tallages - like the other barons of the ports - the queen's treasurer and steward have sent a writ to the bailiff of Pevensey asking him to levy 21 pounds, 6 shillings 8 pence of tallage for the eleventh to fourteenth years of the king's reign, for the queen's benefit, from her people of Pevensey, and have severely distrained the bailiff, Richard de Pevensey and the others named above. And they can have no delivery of these distraints without agreeing to their demands - contrary to the charter and confirmation mentioned above and to the franchise of the Cinque Ports. They request the delivery of the distraints, and that the king order the queen's ministers to cease from such actions in future.

They are to show their charters in Chancery and have a writ in the due form to the queen's bailiffs about the contents of the petition.
