Reference
SC 8/6/277
Date
[1322]
Description
Petitioners
John of Catterick, prior of Newburgh.
Name(s)
Catterick, John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
prior of Newburgh
Nature of request
The prior of Newburgh states that Roger de Mowbray the elder by his charter gave and confirmed to Newburgh and the canons there, in free and perpetual alms, 20 shillings annually, to be received from the mill of Malsard forever, in whosesoever hands that mill should fall, and they were seised of that grant until the mill was seized into the king's hand, together with all the lands and tenements belonging to John de Moubray, Roger's heir, because of his forfeiture. Since then the king's ministers have withheld the rent from the prior and convent, who request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He is to show the evidence he has for the rent in chancery, and there is to be an enquiry into the truth and justice is further to be done.
Places mentioned
Neubourgh (Newburgh), [North Riding of Yorkshire]
Malsard (Kirkby Malzeard), [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Roger de Moubray (Mowbray) the elder
John de Moubray (Mowbray), heir of Roger de Mowbray.
Note
The petition is dated to 1322 because it is clearly in the aftermath of the failed baronial revolt, Mowbray being one of the prominent rebels that was executed and forfeiting his estates as the petition makes clear. In addition a close roll entry of 5 August 1322 records the order to the keeper of Mowbray's lands in Yorkshire to pay the rent and arrears to the petitioner (CCR 1318-1323, p.588).The preceding commission to the close roll entry in CIM 1307-49 pp.157-158 is dated 1 August 1322.
