Description
Petitioners
Richard de Messyng (Messing) of London.
Name(s)
de Messyng (Messing), Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Richard de Messyng states that at the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the fourteenth year of the king's reign, John de Goldyngton leased to Richard, by his deed, his entire manor of Ringers in the vill of Terling, together with all the lands and tenements which belonged to Nicholas le Gras in Essex. This manor was purchased by John's father, William de Goldyngton, for himself and his heirs, from John de Tany and his wife Joan, for the term of Joan's life, for Richard to have and hold for that term. By virtue of this lease Richard was seised peacefully of the manor and tenements until one Geoffrey Dode, who is one of the king's men, by virtue of a commission from the king which he claims to have to seize the rebels' lands into the king's hand, seized the manor and tenements, because of John [de Goldington]'s trespass, together with his [Richard's] goods worth £40. He requests a remedy, and that justice be done to him.
Nature of endorsement
Certain of the king's faithful are to be assigned to enquire into the truth of the contents of the petition, in the presence of the guardian, etc., and, when the inquisition has been returned and the deed that he has on this has been examined, justice is to be done.
