Description
Petitioners
Adam de Cliderhou (Clitheroe), son and heir of Hugh de Clitheroe.
Name(s)
de Cliderhou (Clitheroe), Adam
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Adam, the son and heir of Hugh de Cliderhou, states that his father was disseised of 32 acres of land in Petit Penhilton by Henry de Lacy, formerly earl of Lincoln, who continued this wrong until he died. After his death Thomas, formerly earl of Lancaster, entered the said lands and continued this wrong through power and lordship, so that Adam could not have justice or reason, either through writs or through petitions delivered to the earl of Lancaster. These tenements are now in the king's hand through the forfeiture of the earl of Lancaster, and so Adam requests grace and a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.Because the countess is in the course of suing for her inheritance, and claims that the tenements in the petition are part of it, he is to wait until arrangements have been made concerning the countess' inheritance.
Places mentioned
Petit Penhilton (Little Pendleton), [Lancashire].
People mentioned
Hugh de Cliderhou (Clitheroe), father of the petitioner
Henry de Lascy (Lacy), earl of Lincoln
Thomas [of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster
[Alice of Lancaster], Countess of Lancaster, widow of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster.
Note
The petition dates to 1322 because it is clearly in the aftermath of the baronial revolt and the execution and forfeiture of Thomas of Lancaster. One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323).
