Nature of request
The community of Lincolnshire complain that, although they have been greatly impoverished by plague of their animals, flooding of low-lying land, failure of corn and people taken and put to ransom by the king's rebels and enemies, and although, through malice or fear of these enemies, many have abandoned their lands, so that much of the land of the county is unsown, Robert Darcy and Piers Breton are demanding 4000 well-armed foot-soldiers from the community, with 10 shillings per soldier for expenses - which the county cannot afford. They also complain that the king's bailiffs and ministers have taken corn and malt for his use, to the great harm of the county. They request that he consider their misfortunes, protesting that they are ready to give him what help they can, if it is done with the counsel of men of good will who know the county.
