Date

Description
Petitioners
John Parles.
Name(s)
Parles, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John Parles states that although his father, Alan Parles, was enfeoffed with the manor of Torrisholme, with its appurtenances, for himself and his heirs engendered of his body, and although he, John, is such an heir, Robert de Holand, on the Wednesday following the feast of St Lucy in the fifteenth year of the present king, made Alan Parles enfeoff him with the manor. This enfeoffment is defeasible in law, and, because of Robert de Holand's misdeeds, the manor is in the king's hand: therefore he requests a writ from the king to the guardians of the said county to enquire into the truth of what he says. He further states that he has been with Andrew de Harcla for three years, and in all his feats of arms in England and Scotland - as he himself can attest.
Nature of endorsement
Robert is in prison, and so he should wait for his release etc.
Places mentioned
Torissholm (Torrisholme), Lancashire.
People mentioned
Alan Parles, father of petitioner
Robert de Holand
Andrew de Harcla (Harclay).
Note
The petition is dated to 1322 because it refers to the imprisonment of Robert de Holand, one of those rebels taken in the lead up to the battle of Boroughbridge and its aftermath. One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323). The feast of St Lucy, 15 Edward II would fall in December 1321, which would further confirm this dating.
