Description
Petitioners
Community of Wales, of North Wales and South Wales.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The community of Wales states that when Roger de Mortimer, the nephew, and Roger de Mortimer, the uncle, who had the keeping of Wales, took and occupied castles, towns, and other goods, against the king, they rose up against them, on the king's behalf, although they should have considered them as their lords. Now they learn that their lands in Wales will be given back to the Mortimers, and from threats that the Mortimers have made to them, they fear that they will not be able to hold their lands or live in them in peace, but will be ruined. Therefore they request that the Mortimers not be given grace of their lands or lordship in Wales, threatening to defend themselves against them if necessary.
Nature of endorsement
The Mortimers are in the king's keeping at his will. And the king will ordain what is to the benefit of his subjects.
Places mentioned
Wales
North Wales
South Wales.
People mentioned
Roger de Mortimer, the nephew
Roger de Mortimer, the uncle.
Note
The petition is dated to 1322 because the petition refers to the imprisonment of the Mortimers after the failed baronial revolt of that year. One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323).
