Nature of request
Walter de Shirburn and Thomas de Grenfeld state that on the morrow of the Purification, in the fifteenth year of the reign of King Edward, son of King Edward, Richard de Womberge came to Sherburn in Elmet, and took fifty-two and a half quarters of oats from them, without payment and against their will, taking them to Pontefract castle. Note
One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323). The crime complained of took place in February 15 Edward II (1322), so the complaint was probably made shortly afterwards.
