SC 8/5/248
Date
[1322]
Description
Petitioners
Agnes de Codeleye (Cudleigh), widow of John de Cudleigh.
Name(s)
de Codeleye (Cudleigh), Agnes
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Agnes de Codeleye states that her mother, Mabel la Veysi, held certain tenements in the vill of Upton for herself and her heirs, but married Germain de Tonebrigg, who has now died and who held by the courtesy of England, and who enfeoffed Maurice de Berkeleye, the father, with these tenements. Maurice is now in the king's custody, and Agnes requests the king's grace on this matter.
Nature of endorsement
She is to await Maurice's release.
Places mentioned
Upton [unidentified].
People mentioned
John de Codeleye (Cudleigh), late husband of the petitioner
Mabel la Veysi (Vesci), petitioner's mother, Germain de Tonebrigg (Tonbridge), husband of Mabel la Veysi
Maurice de Berkeleye, the father.
Note
The petition is dated to 1322 because it refers to Maurice de Berkely, the father being in the king's hand, and this is clearly after the failed baronial revolt of that year. One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323).
