Description
Petitioners
Richard de Croylond (Crowland).
Name(s)
de Croylond (Crowland), Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Richard de Croylond states that the king ordered the sheriff of Northamptonshire to take into his hand all the lands which belonged to Bartholomew de Badlesmere in that county, and that Bartholomew, at the time when he took up his quarrel against the king and afterwards, held the manors of Milton, Paston and Etton in Northamptonshire, but that, after his death, Piers Russel, parson of the church of Etton, entered these manors, and still holds them, without permission or warrant of the king. He requests that the king grant him or John Moriz a commission to enquire into how he holds them and on what warrant, or that John Moriz can enter them by the king's warrant, and answer to the king for their issues.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is to be sent into Chancery, and there a writ is to be issued to the keeper of the lands etc. to enquire etc., and if this is so, what should be done for the king's advantage is to be done.
Places mentioned
Milton, [Northamptonshire]
Paston, [Northamptonshire]
Etton, [Northamptonshire].
People mentioned
Sheriff of Northamptonshire
Bartholomew de Baddelesmere (Badlesmere)
Piers Russel, parson of the church of Etton
John Moriz.
Note
The petition is dated to 1322 as it is clearly in the aftermath of the baronial revolt of 1322, Bartholomew de Badlesmere being a prominent rebel of 1322 who was executed and forfeited after the baronial defeat. One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323).
