Description
Petitioners
John de Grey.
Name(s)
de Grey, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John de Grey complains that a group of malefactors, tenants of the king from Merioneth, Penllyn, Ardudwy, Edeyrnion, Glyndyfrdwy and Dinmael, sent by (par lenvoy) Griffith ap Rees, came to his town of Ruthyn on the Wednesday before the feast of St Gregory, in the fifteenth year of the king's reign, and there attacked his castle, and started to burn down the town, burning down the houses of Blethyn ap Heylyn and Jankyn le Messer - they would have burnt down the whole town if they had not been prevented - robbed his people of the town and surrounding area, killed his men John his parker and Richard de Faryntone, gravely wounded forty others, destroyed his parks, drove off many horses from his stud - of which they are still seised - killed and carried off his game, and stole the goods of the tenants of the country, both livestock and other goods; and they still rob and destroy in the area. He requests grace and a remedy of the king, as the malefactors are his tenants and he can have a remedy in no other way: if they were anyone else's tenants he could have recovery for this trespass by Day of the March or in some other manner according to the customs of the country.

Note
Assuming that this petition is contemporary with the others surrounding it, and the St Gregory referred to is Gregory the Great (whose feast is 12 March (3 September for the feast of his ordination)), then the Wednesday before St Gregory's day, in the fifteenth year of the king's reign, when the attack took place, would probably be 10 March 1322, or possibly 2 September 1321.
