Description
Petitioners
Merchants and others of the community (la commune) travelling between Chester and London or elsewhere.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that the king's highway called Longford, leading from Chester to London and other towns in the area, because of the marshy area and rising water levels, is flooded and destroyed to a greater degree than previously, to the extent that no-one can pass without danger and several people have been drowned. They request pontage to last at the king's will, in order to build bridges and causeways.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be sent to the sheriff of Shropshire to enquire into whether any particular person is responsible for the upkeep of the road, and if so, who, and in what way. If not, there is to be an enquiry into whether it is to the harm or prejudice of the king or others, or to the benefit of the people of those parts or of travellers if the king grants pavage for the repair of the road. He is then to be informed, so that he can further do what is necessary.
