Reference
SC 8/5/233
Date
[1322]
Description
Petitioners
George de Brithmereston (Brigmerston).
Name(s)
de Brithmereston (Brigmerston), George
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Brithmereston states that he was indicted of felony in the county court of Wiltshire, and imprisoned until he was handed over to the present bishop of Salisbury as a convicted clerk, and then purged and released. He then sued a writ of the king to the sheriff of Wiltshire for delivery of his lands and goods, and also of a messuage and a carucate of land with appurtenances in Brigmerston, which Maurice de Berkeleye the father and Maurice de Berkeleye the son had seized while he was in prison; but through collusion between Maurice de Berkeleye and the sheriff, he could not have delivery of this land. He requests a writ to the sheriff of Wiltshire to enquire into the truth of this, and, if it should be proved to be true, he requests the king to order the delivery of the land.
Nature of endorsement
Because Maurice is in prison, he is to await his release.
Places mentioned
(Wiltshire)
Brithmereston (Brigmerston), [Wiltshire].
People mentioned
[Roger Martival], bishop of Salisbury
Sheriff of Wiltshire
Maurice de Berkeleye, the elder, Maurice de Berkeleye, the younger.
Note
The petition is dated to 1322 because it is clearly in the aftermath of the baronial revolt of 1322, and makes mention of the imprisonment of Maurice de Berkeley, a prominent rebel. One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323).
