Description
Petitioners
Alan de Claxeby (Claxby) of Bolingbroke; Ralph West of Bolingbroke; William atte Kyrke (atte Kirk) of Kirkby.
Name(s)
de Claxeby (Claxby); West; atte Kyrke (atte Kirk), Alan; Ralph; William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Alan de Claxeby, Ralph West, and William atte Kyrke state that, three years before the death of Thomas, earl of Lancaster, they bought the woods of Kirkby and Hunselby, near Bolingbroke, for a sum of money paid to the earl in advance, as can be seen from the account roll of the receipt of Bolingbroke; and they had a term of four years to strip the place. Within this time the king took the castle of Bolingbroke with its appurtenances into his hand, because of the forfeiture of the earl, and the king's bailiffs there prevent them from selling or carrying out of the wood the timber already cut there, or from cutting the growing timber, for which they have paid in full. They request a remedy that will prevent them from losing their money, for they and their children are on point of destitution because of their purchase.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the timber cut before the earl's death: the king's bailiffs in those parts are to be ordered that, if the petition contains the truth, it is to be delivered to them. With regard to the growing timber: the king is not obliged to answer.
Places mentioned
Bolyngbrok (Bolingbroke), [Lincolnshire]
Kyrkeby (East Kirkby), [Lincolnshire]
Hundleby, [Lincolnshire]
People mentioned
Thomas [of Lancaster], earl of Lancaster.
Note
The petition is dated to 1322 because it is clearly in the aftermath of the baronial revolt of 1322, and makes mention of the death and forfeiture of Thomas of Lancaster. One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (1321-1323).
