Description
Petitioners
Henry de Sotehille, knight.
Name(s)
de Sotehille, Henry
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Henry de Sotehille states that he was never party to the late rebellion against the king - at the parliament at Westminster, at the assault on Tickhill castle, nor in Wales, at Burton-upon-Trent, at Boroughbridge, or elsewhere - nor was he allied to the rebels by oath or bond. The earl of Lancaster did send for him, among others, when he was about to leave Pontefract for Tutbury, on pain of losing goods and chattels and in peril of their bodies; and there he told them that he was going to make peace between the king and the rebels and asked them to accompany him. When Henry found out their true purpose, at Tutbury, he left him. He was pursued by the earl's men, robbed of his horses, gear and all that he had, and barely escaped alive. Despite this, he was imprisoned by the sheriff of Nottinghamshire, and is still on mainprize by the king's writ; his lands and goods are seized into the king's hand, and his wife and children expelled and destitute. He requests the king's pity and grace.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.He is in prison, and the king will ordain for his release and that of the others at his will.
