[? c. 1321-? c. 1327]
Description

Burgesses of Beverley.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The burgesses request murage for three years on all merchandise coming to Beverley by land or water in order to enclose and pave the town of Beverley.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege. When the king comes to these parts, he will consult with the archbishop.
Places mentioned
Beverle (Beverley), [East Riding of Yorkshire].
Note
Dated on the guard '? c. 1323, cf. 222'. SC 8/5/222 is a confirmation of the charters of Beverley concerning its wall. It is almost certainly not the same occasion and its relevance seems limited. However, the hand seems similar, and the name 'Herl.' of the scribe following the note 'Coram rege' would place it at about this period. The French endorsement, however, might suggest a date between 1323 and the end of Edward II's reign, rather than before 1323 - although this is conjecture, and, as many of the other petitions in this file are from 1321-1322, a date of c. 1321-1327 seems likely.
