Description
Petitioners
People of Beverley.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people of Beverley make two requests.1) They have been granted various liberties by the charters of the king's progenitors and by his confirmation; The clause 'licet' appears in the charters, but, through negligence, not in the confirmation; therefore they request that the king renew the confirmation with the clause.2) Although Beverley is not on the coast and is charged with fifteenths and subsidies like other towns in Yorkshire, they have recently been required, by a letter of the privy seal, to contribute, with the people of Kingston upon Hull, to the making of a barge, while several towns on the coast - Barton upon Humber, Grimsby, Hornsea, Scarborough and Whitby - have been excused. They request that they may in future be quit of paying for or contributing to the making of ships or boats of any kind.
Nature of endorsement
They are to have their charter with a clause of 'licet', paying a fine of £10 for this; they are also to have letters patent of the king's grant in accordance with the intent of the second article, without paying a fine.
