Nature of request
The abbot of Fecamp complains that the mayor and freemen of Winchelsea, in enclosing their town - which belongs to the king - at the king's command, have included within the town ditch many of the abbot's tenements in Higham, so that the abbot has lost the rents from these. He requests compensation for this damage, or an exchange with the king for lands elsewhere.
Nature of endorsement
The council is to consider what is to be done, but the petition should also be coram rege.The constable of Dover castle and the Warden of the Cinque Ports are to be ordered to enquire into the contents of the petition (except for the exchange), and to inform the king.Nothing is to be done about the exchange without the king.
