Description
Petitioners
Adam Russel of London.
Name(s)
Russel, Adam
.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Adam Russel complains that he has been wrongly accused of having been attached to some of the king's enemies, and his lands taken into the king's hand, leaving him and his wife and children destitute when, he claims, he was in fact one of the first to come to the king's side at Ongar, and afterwards followed him loyally until he was wounded at Burton-upon-Trent. He requests the king's grace and a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The king is to be informed of the reason for the goods being seized, and, if it is insufficient, he is to be released with his goods.
Places mentioned
London; (Ongar), [Essex]; Burton-upon-Trent, [Staffordshire]; Scotland.
Note
The petition is dated to 1322 as it is clear from the petitioner's claims that he has suffered as a consequence of an error that saw him as one of the rebels of 1322. The inquisition examining this matter is dated at Alnwick, 9 August 16 Edward II (1322) (CIM 1307-49, p.163). It finds that Adam came to the king at Ongar with horses and arms, and was with the king at Burton-upon-Trent; his lands and goods were taken into the king's hands because his wife was the daughter of John Joce, knight, said to be an adherent of the rebel Bartholomew de Badelesmere. The order of 1322, October 25, at York. to John le Porter, keeper of certain lands in the king's hands in Essex, to return Adam Russel's lands and goods to him, upon his finding mainpernors to have him before the king at his pleasure, as the keeper has informed the king that Adam's lands and goods were taken into the king's hands because his wife was the daughter of John Joce (CCR 1318-1323, pp. 602-3).
