Reference
SC 8/5/207
Date
[1322]
Description
Petitioners
Roger de Nunwyk (Nunwick).
Name(s)
de Nunwyk (Nunwick), Roger
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Roger de Nunwyk complains that his ancestors have always held the wardenship of the free chase of Nidderdale, which belonged to the ancestors of John de Moubray, and the fee of chief forester, with associated privileges, and his father, Robert, died seised of this wardenship and fee. However, after his death the late John de Mowbray occupied these and held them until his death, and they are now seized into the king's hand with his other lands. He requests grace and remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.He is to show his title to that fee etc. and then there is to be an inquisition into the truth of the contents of the petition. This is to be returned into Chancery, and what is just is to be done.
Places mentioned
Nidderdale, [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
John de Moubray (Mowbray)
Robert [de Nunwyk], father of the petitioner.
Note
The petition is dated to 1322 because the reference to the death of John Mowbray marks it out as following the defeat of the baronial rebels at Boroughbridge, Mowbray being executed in the aftermath and his land forfeit. The appointment of Richard de Carduyl to the office claimed in this petition found in CPR 1321-1324, p.95 is dated at Pontefract, 1322 April 12. As this petition makes no mention of Richard de Carduyl, it was presumably presented before this, rather than at the parliament which was in York in May of that year.
