SC 8/4/181
Date
[c. 1320]
Description
Petitioners
Archbishops, bishops, prelates, earls and barons, and the other great lords of the land.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The great lords request remedy concerning the levying of scutage which the great lords were accustomed to give for their lordships, but which is now being demanded by a summons out of the Exchequer for several years of the reign of Edward I, and for Edward II for the Welsh and Scottish wars. It seems to the great lords that they are being treated harshly that the king wishes to levy scutage as they fully made their service towards the king and his ancestors.
Nature of endorsement
Those who are burdened are to come into Chancery, and remedy is to be made to them upon the things in this petition.
l petition, but a verbatim recital of it amongst lengthy legal proceedings. It seems likely that the petition is earlier than 1320, and was simply receiving attention in the 1320 parliament.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1320 by the heading in Rot. Parl., vol I, p.365 for the parliament held on Monday in the octave of St Michael, 14 Edward II. The enrolment in Rot. Parl., vol I. pp.383b-384a (no. 114) is not the actual petition, but a verbatim recital of it amongst lengthy legal proceedings. It seems likely that the petition is earlier than 1320, and was simply receiving attention in the 1320 parliament.
