Description
Petitioners
People who have been sheriffs and those that still are of the county of Devon.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
They request remedy concerning the levying of debts within the county. The great lords have most of the hundreds of the county, and their bailiffs collect the debts. They appoint insufficient bailiffs who have no lands or tenements in the bailiwick and the sheriff accounts for these sums but the bailiffs do not account to him, so that he is burdened with the debts with no means of remedy which is to the damage of the king and the impoverishment of the sheriff and of the people of the county.
Nature of endorsement
It should be written to the lords that they should appoint adequate bailiffs under them, and for whom they will wish to respond for.
Places mentioned
