Reference
SC 8/4/157
Date
[1336]
Description
Petitioners
Community of Sussex.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The community request that a place be assigned in the county for the holding of the county court, that a gaol be sited in the county, and the sheriff be in that place to receive writs from the king.
Nature of endorsement
The sheriff is ordered that he hold the county court in a place where it is accustomed to be held for the profit of the king, and the ease of the people.
Places mentioned
Sussex
Surrey.
Note
The petition is dated to 1336. The date for this stems from a note on the guard. This is based on the commission issued on 2 May 1336 to establish a place for the court to be held (CPR 1334-8, p.289). The commission was prompted by a petition, and it seems likely that it was this petition.
