Description

John le Stretleye, son of Hugh le Stretleye.

Stretleye, John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
1) Stretley requests a commission of oyer and terminer to enquire into the matter of the armed assault made on his manor of Creslow by Andrew de Jarpunville and others to his great damage. He also requests that the justices will do him right concerning the damage done to him by the abetment of Robert Fitz Neil as a great part of Stretley's chattels were carried to Fitz Neil's manor of Salden.2) He further complains that he has taken an assize against them, but has been ousted from his suit because Fitz Neil appeared on the day with such power and menaces that there were not sufficient men to make the recognisance of the jury.1)
Nature of endorsement
The king has granted to Stretleye the oyer and terminer, and two justices are to be assigned by the chancellor who are good and sufficient.2) On the second point the law is ordained so he should sue according to the same law.

Note
The petition is dated tentatively to 1320 by the heading in Rot. Parl., vol I, p.365 for the parliament held on Monday in the octave of St Michael, 14 Edward II. However, the petition found in Rot. Parl., vol I, p.372b (no. 14) is not the same petition as found here, as there are minor differences in the Latin summary, and the endorsement is completely different, it is possible that the two are not mere duplicates differently answered, but different petitions on the same matter presented at different times.
