Description

Name(s)
de Cottingham, Ralph
Addressees

Nature of request
Cottingham requests remedy and that the records of the Exchequer are searched concerning a piece of land that his father held in the town of Kingston for 20s.. Cottingham's father let part of the land to Robert de Paghel for 20s., and whilst the vill was in the hand of the king he died while Cottingham was abroad. The land and rent were taken into the king's hand. Cottingham recovered the land held in lordship by his father at his death, but the rent was retained, though Cottingham was still charged the 20s. as if he held all of the land, so that he is being charged 20s. too much.
Nature of endorsement
The treasurer and barons of the Exchequer are ordered by a writ under the great seal to check the contents of the petition, that they view the inquisitions taken before John de Insula and the . . . of Peter de Campania and other memoranda concerning the business. And if the place was rented for 20s. so that the other 20s. is unjustly demanded and levied, then Cottingham is to be pardoned the 20s. which is unjustly levied.
