Nature of request
The earl shows that he waged war on the chieftains of the outer isles of Scotland on behalf of John, king of Scotland, for which the king gave him Dingwall and Ferintosh for a farm that was barely less than in the time of King Alexander. He requests that he is not the loser for these lands, as he did not have them by the king's gift, and not for making war against the present king.1)
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.2) It is to be enquired by king's lieutenant and the chamberlain of Scotland of the value of the land, and of the other circumstances concerning this business, and to inform the king at the next parliament.

William, earl of Ross was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1297, so it is possible that this petition was made in his time in England (CPR 1292-1301, p.307).
