Description
Petitioners

Name(s)
Warmington, Thomas
Addressees

Occupation

Nature of request
The abbot and prior were collectors of the tenth granted by the clergy to Pope Boniface VIII in aid of the Church of Rome for three years, and they rendered their account at the Exchequer, delivering all the money that they had received, and also details of the arrears and the names of the debtors. A writ was then issued to the bishop of Chester commanding him to levy the remaining arrears, which he did collecting £48 7s. 6d.. The treasurer and barons of the Exchequer ordered him to put the money on deposit at New Temple in the custody of Brother John de Stoke, treasurer of the place by an indenture made between his clerk, John Pipard and Stoke. The abbot and prior request that this sum be allowed on their account, and that they are not charged for it, as none of it was levied by them, nor deposited by them, but by the bishop of Chester and his clerk.
Nature of endorsement
The treasurer and barons of the Exchequer having informed themselves on the contents in the petition, and having inspected the memoranda concerning the rendering of account, and having called all of those who were to be summoned, if the contents contained in the petition are found to be true, then they are to do justice to the collectors, and they are not to be unduly charged or oppressed.
