Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Durham.
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The prior and convent request remedy in that since the death of Henry de Percy, who died seised of the manor of Swinhoe, they have not received 5 quarters of wheat which they were accustomed to have from that manor, because it has been taken into the king's hands, and the wheat has been withheld. Eustace de Vescy granted the 5 quarters to Our Lady, St Cuthbert and the monks of Lindisfarne by his charter, which was subsequently confirmed by his son and grandson. [Copies of the original grant and confirmations are noted as being attached to the petition].1)
Nature of endorsement
Because the charter of which mention is made in the petition was viewed before the council, the escheator of the king beyond the Trent by oaths etc should enquire whether the prior was seised of the wheat until the death of Henry de Percy, just as was asserted by the petition or not; and if it is so then by whose gift, and by whose hand they received it, and where and at which terms, and at what time, and how much, and in what manner, and of other articles concerning the premises. And the king is to be certified by the petition so that right can be done.2) Coram cancellario et thesauriato.
