SC 8/3/101
Date
[? 1315]
Description
Petitioners
Hugh de Courtenay.
Name(s)
de Courtenay, Hugh
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Courtenay requests that his grievances be remedied and the king should wish to give him £18 6s. 8d. which sum was from a fee of the county of Devon which Isabel de Forz his ancestor held. As her heir, upon her death he was seised of the same as appears by a writ of Edward I of his 26th year, but subsequently the king ousted Courtenay, and moreover demanded by resummons of his Exchequer the money that he had received in the time of Edward I. It seems to Courtenay that he is being oppressed by the king, and that the money was given to him by Edward I as his right and heritage with other lands which descended to him on the death of the countess.
Nature of endorsement
The treasurer and barons of the Exchequer are ordered by a writ of Chancery that . . . they inform the king if Courtenay was seised of the rent just as it is said, and of the cause whereby it was detained from him, and by whom.
Places mentioned
Devon.
People mentioned
Isabel de Forz, countess of Devon.
Note
This may date to 1315 when Hugh de Courtenay was involved in a lengthy legal case initiated by a separate petition before parliament (Rot. Parl., vol I, pp. 334a-336b (no. 1)).It is dated on the guard to c.1307, but no reason is given for this.
