Description
Petitioners
Laurence de Seynt Jak (Saint James), master of the ship called the ship of Our Lady of Fount Arabye.
Name(s)
de Seynt Jak (Saint James), Laurence
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
master of the ship called the ship of Our Lady of Fount Arabye
Nature of request
Seynt Jak shows that he and his fellows, merchants of Gascony, on the way to Gascony carrying goods of the value of £2,200 encountered a storm and were wrecked upon the coast of Denge Marsh. Then men of Winchelsea, Rye and Romney came and by force and arms stole their goods. On this Bernard Franssa, attorney of the merchants purchased a writ of the king to Robert de Kendal to enquire of these things, but he was unable to do so as the men of the ports disputed his right to do so. The merchants request that the king and his council give evidence if the king and his ministers with a warrant have the authority to enquire of such malefactors or not, and order that the merchants have restitution of their goods, and remedy that the men of the Cinque Ports are not able to be inquisitors of the trespasses that they themselves have made.
Nature of endorsement
Because by a previous order to Robert de Kendale nothing was done as is contained in the petition, Robert, then constable of Dover is again ordered to enquire etc. and he should make rapid and full justice.

People mentioned
Laurence de Tore (Tours), merchant of Gascony

Bernard Franssa, attorney of the merchants.
Note
The petition is dated to 1315 by reference to the title in Rot. Parl., vol I, p. 314, noting that a related petition to be for the parliament held at Westminster in the octave of Hillary, 8 Edw.II. It seems clear that the entry in Rot. Parl., vol I, p.329b (no. 205) is not the same petition, so it is likely that this petition is not a near contemporary.
