Description
Petitioners
William Gainsborough, archbishop of York.
Name(s)
Gainsborough, William
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
archbishop of York
Nature of request
The archbishop requests that the king grant a new letter for an inquest in the form of a preceding letter which was not acted on, assigning upstanding men to enquire at Blyth by knights and other good men of the country of the things of which the archbishop brought a suit in the court of the late king against Master Boniface de Saluces for the disturbances that he has made to the archbishop and his ministers, for having the institution and destitution in the churches and vicarages of Lowdham and other places which are in the archbishop's diocese, and over which he was used to having all manner of jurisdictions. Having shown all of this to the king, the king granted an inquest, but this did not happen to the great damage of the archbishop.
Nature of endorsement
Edmund Deyncourt, John de Insula and John de Doncaster and two of them, of which Insula should be one, should be assigned to enquire upon the contents in the petition and to certify the king as previously it was to be done that right be done to the archbishop, because other justices were assigned, and did nothing. Thence the assignment should be viewed in Chancery and it should be assigned in the form before. The inquisition is to be in the presence of Boniface de Saluces if he wishes for the lord king and himself.
