[c. 1315]
Description
Petitioners
Eleanor de Percy, widow of Henry de Percy.
Name(s)
de Percy, Eleanor
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Percy requests that right be done to her in so much as her late husband held the manor of Pocklington in socage and rendered a mewed sparrowhawk for all services, and as closest heir of her son she should hold it in his minority for his care, but the escheator of the north came and seized it into the king's hands after her husband's death along with other lands held by knight's service. The escheator and then John de Doncaster to whom the manor was subsequently granted detain it from her so that she can have no profit.
Nature of endorsement
It is ordered by a writ of the king concerning the narrative of the petition to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they examine the books and other memoranda of the Exchequer to be informed of the custom concerning custodians of lands and tenements which are held by the service of rendering one mewed sparrowhawk in cases where they are held with other lands and tenements which are held from the king in chief by knight's service, and John de Doncaster should be called in the same place to answer the contents of the petition; and nonetheless the petition is to be delivered to the keeper of the rolls in Chancery to examine the inquisition post-mortem of Godfrey de Melsa returned into Chancery to see by which service the manor of Pocklington was held. And all the business is to be referred to the great council for the duration of the parliament if possible by the chancellor, the keeper of the Rolls and treasurer so that right can be done.
Places mentioned

People mentioned
[Henry de Percy], late husband of the petitioner
[Henry de Percy], son of the petitioner
John de Donecaster (Doncaster)

Note
The petition is dated to c. 1315 by reference to the title in Rot. Parl., vol I, p.314, noting a related petition to be for the parliament held at Westminster in the octave of Hillary, 8 Edw.II. The Rot. Parl., vol I, p.326a (no. 185) may not be the same petition, though it is likely to date closely to it.
