Occupation
parson of the church of St John of Devizes
Nature of request
De Yucflet requests that the king grant that he may be able to have the tithes of hay from the meadow of the king's park of Devizes which has been discontinued because the park has been turned into pasture and sold to men of the country to feed their livestock. The park is held in dower by Queen Margaret, and she wishes to deliver the tithes to the church, but cannot do so without the king and his council's assent. If the tithes are not granted the church will no longer be able to provide masses for the alms of King Henry and Queen Matilda.
Nature of endorsement
John de Foxley, John Bluet, and William de Harden, or two of them are to enquire whether the king, when the park was in the hand of the king, was accustomed to give the tithes of hay in the park to anyone, at what time, how and in what manner; and if the meadow was converted into pasture, then when, and by whom, how, and how much the tithes issuing from it were worth. The inquisition is to be made in the presence of the parson if he wishes, and returned into the presence of the king.
