Description
Petitioners
Tenants of Liskeard.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The tenants request remedy as the bishop of Exeter has excommunicated them and placed their church under an interdict, condemning them, so that they cannot charge or discharge, nor prove the composition, nor put in judgement without the king and council concerning the tithes of the mills of Liskeard. Richard, earl of Cornwall let to them at farm the vill of Liskeard with its mills under an annual rent of £18 18d., and half a mark to the vicar of Liskeard for the tithes of the mills. The tenants were not to pay more against their warrant, so that earl Richard granted 8s. from the rent to the prior of Launceston, parson of the vill of Liskeard, and an agreement was made at the prior and vicar's request establishing the tithes forever. From the time of the agreement the tenants have paid the half mark to the vicars, and the provost of the king for his manor of Liskeard has paid the 8s. rent to the prior/parson until John Launseles, vicar of Liskeard, contrary to the composition made by previous vicars with earl Richard demanded the tithes in corn, though he should only have had the half mark, and the prior as parson 8s. by the composition, to the disinheritance of the king, and in a burden on the ville.
