Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Peterborough.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Abbot of Peterborough
Nature of request
The abbot requests that the king make a remedy and save the abbot's rights so that they are not disinherited. He has received the rent service and scutage from the manor of Torpel which the king has given to the earl of Kent, and which the queen purchased. The abbot was seised of this and took the rents, but after John de Cammois sold it to the queen he received nothing from the queen during her life. Similarly the abbot used to receive the rent, service and scutage from the manor of Thorpe Waterville with the hamlets of Achurch and Aldwincle, but the king has granted them to the earl of Pembroke and Mary his wife after they came into his hand by the forfeiture of Robert de Holland. By the king's grants the rents are detained from the abbot.1)
Nature of endorsement
It is to be established from whom the earl and Mary hold the manors of Torpel and others, if from the king then the abbot is to sue to the king, and if from a chief lord then he is to sue at common law.2) Coram magno consilio.
