Description
Petitioners

King and council.
Nature of request
The people request that the king grant that they have the franchise according to the form established before the justices concerning their complaint about rivers being placed 'in defence'. They cited clauses in Magna Carta against rivers being put in defence and asked that the king prohibit it on the Ouse and Ure rivers between the city and Boroughbridge. However Richard, earl of Cornwall and Edmund his son had placed the rivers in defence. The mayor and commonalty had proved their franchise by the great assize of 24 knights, and they were seised of their franchise for 2 years, but after this Earl Edmund disseised them of it to the great damage of the city.
Nature of endorsement
They should have a writ of Chancery to bring the record and process of the Eyre so that the king can inspect it and decide how to act.
