Description
Petitioners
Geoffrey de Sai (Say), son and heir of William de Sai.
Name(s)
de Sai (Say), Geoffrey
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Sai states that whereas Adam de Bavent and his ancestors held of Sai and his ancestors 2 knight's fees, 1 fee being in Hatcham, and 1 fee being in Brandon and in Whitfield by which Sai's ancestors had had the wardship and marriage of each of Adam's ancestors who were under age, and reliefs from those who were of full age after the death of their predecessor. William, father of the petitioner, was previously seised of the wardship of Roger son and heir of Adam by his minority after the death of his father until he was deprived of it arbitrarily by the king by an award made improperly by the treasurer and the barons of the Exchequer. And William de Sai came before Master William de Marche then treasurer, and the barons of the Exchequer in the 21 year, and requested that the wardship be given to him as his right to which the treasurer and barons replied that Adam de Bavent had held the knight's fee in Hatcham of the Crown by which they made the award of the wardship. Sai is prepared to prove the same in all manners that the king's court will consider, namely that Adam de Bavent doesn't hold anything of the king in Hatcham, rather he holds the two fees of Sai of the barony of Maminot, which Sai holds of the king by rendering the service of guarding the castle of Dover, for which Sai puts himself on the examination of the books of the exchequer and the keepership of the castle of Dover. Geoffrey requests that the king and council order the treasurer and the barons of the Exchequer to examine the rolls and books of the Exchequer concerning the wardship, and if by this there is an error by which Sai was disinherited, that the said wardship be restored to him with the issues from the time when Sai was deprived of it by the king, or at least that the king command that henceforth the wardship be rendered to him and his heirs, and for the issues that the king received, some allowance be made to Sai in any manner that the king wishes.
Nature of endorsement
It is ordered by a writ of Chancery to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that when they have called the justices and others of the king's council, when they have heard the reasonable complaints of Sai, and when they have examined the rolls and memoranda of the Exchequer if an error should be found in any of the contents of the petition they should correct and amend it in accordance with their discretion, previous judgements made for the king notwithstanding.
