Nature of request
The Suffelds state that whereas they brought a writ of dower before the justices of the Bench against the abbot of Vale Royal, and they demanded of him the reasonable dower of Joan from the free tenement which belonged to Richard de Hethersett, her first husband, which tenement are in Middlesex. The abbot in the course of pleading showed a charter of the king and said that he was not able to give Joan her dower without the agreement of the king by which the plea is postponed until the king gives his consent. Walter and Joan Suffeld request a writ to the justices of the Bench to continue the plea, the charter notwithstanding.

[Walter] should have a writ from the Chancery to the justices that they should proceed in that plea, the charter not withstanding.
