Reference
SC 8/1/44
Date
[1307]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Newstead.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The prior and convent request that they be allowed to enclose 20 more acres from a hay called Linby, or from their demesne in the forest of Sherwood, or that the payment be deducted for the additional 20 acres. The prior and convent ought to have enclosed 180 acres from the hay, but were 20 acres deficient.
Nature of endorsement
The Justice of the Forest is commanded that he should enquire into the quantity that they are deficient of, and certify the treasurer.
Places mentioned
Novel Leu en Shirewode (Newstead), [Nottinghamshire]
Shirewode (Sherwood), [Nottinghamshire]
Lyndeby (Linby), [Nottinghamshire].
Note
The petition is dated to 1307, based on the dating of Rot. Parl., vol I, p.192, the dating of the memoranda roll being for the parliament at Carlisle on Wednesday in the Octave of St Hillary, 35 Edw. I. The grant of an extension to the prior and convent on the 1 April 1307 at Carlisle confirms the dating (CPR 1301-7, p.513).
