Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/1/42
Date
[c. 1307-1308]
Description
Petitioners
Alice le Bygod (Bigod), widow of Roger le Bigod, late earl of Norfolk and Marshal of England.
Name(s)
Bygod (Bigod), Alice
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
1) Bygod requests reasonable dower or compensation from the lands of the late earl in England for the Marshalship of England, and of 50 marks which the earl received from the Exchequer each year for the county of Norfolk. She also requests that she might have further dower lands from the earl's lands in England in exchange for lands in Ireland which the king might wish to hold whole.2) Bygod further requests that her claim of dower is not further delayed, and that some allowance is made for the 2 years delay in assigning her dower. She had sued to Edward I for an assignment but he did nothing, and a further suit to the last parliament led to an order to search the remembrances of Chancery and Exchequer before the next parliament.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Norfolk
Hirland (Ireland).
People mentioned
Roger le Bygod (Bigod), Earl of Norfolk
Adam de Osegodby (Osgodby).
Note
The petition would appear to date to the period 1307-8. The reference to one parliament already having been held, and one parliament to come presumably refer to the Northampton parliament, the first of Edward II's reign, and his coronation parliament of February 1308. It is unlikely to be later than this, as Bygod went on pilgrimage to St James, Compostella in 1309 (cf. various refs in CPR 1307-13). It is also unlikely to be earlier than 1306 when Bigod was appointing attorneys to sue for her dower (Rot. Parl., vol I, p.191b).
