Description
Petitioners
Gilbert de Elsefeld (Elsfield).
Name(s)
de Elsefeld (Elsfield), Gilbert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Elsefeld shows by his present suit by petition in parliament that whereas John de Saint Helen, formerly the husband of Julian de Elsfield, grandmother of Elsefeld, leased to Adam de Stratton £10 of land and rent with appurtenances in Blunsdon, and 100s. of rent with appurtenances in Cricklade for the term of his life, John and Julian holding the same in dower from the inheritance of John de Elsfield, Elsefeld's father, whose heir he is. Afterwards by the forfeiture of Adam de Stratton the lands amongst others came into the hand of the king, father of the present king, and they still remain so. At the suit of Elsefeld a writ was granted to the treasurer and the chamberlains of the Exchequer that they should search the rolls and muniments that belonged to Adam de Statton in the treasury, and they found muniments that testified to the delivery of seisin by John de Saint Helen, but these have remained in the Exchequer. In addition, so that they could be better advised, John de Foxley was assigned by a writ to enquire into the delivery of seisin, and the inquest was to be returned into the Exchequer. It was also ordered that all the documents should be sent to Chancery so that Elsefeld requested that right be done to his suit in parliament by the petition, and that the petition by the council of the king be returned to Chancery and the chancellor, who at that time was the bishop of Norwich, be assigned so that right be done, but Elsefeld has not had delivery, so that he requests that the king and his council order the chancellor to view the documents and do right to him.
Nature of endorsement
It is commanded to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they inform the king in Chancery of the tenor of the muniments and inventories in the same place that concern this business; and they are to send this certification and the inquisition taken before John de Foxley which resides in Chancery as it is said above coram rege.
Places mentioned
Blunesdon (Blunsdon), [Wiltshire]
Crikelad (Cricklade), [Wiltshire].
People mentioned
Julian [de Saint Eleyne (Saint Helen)] wife of John de Seynt Eleyne
John de Seynt Eleyne (Saint Helen)
John de Elsefeld (Elsfield), father of the petitioner
Adam de Stratton
John de Foxle (Foxley).
Note
The petition is likely to be dating to 1324-1325 or thereafter, as there is a reference to the bishop of Norwich being chancellor, and this is likely to be John Salmon who was no longer in office by June 1323. However the picture is muddied by his successor as chancellor, William Airmyn, also being bishop of Norwich. But Elsefeld does seem to disappear from the patent and close rolls by the end of Edward II's reign, so 1324-5 still seems likely. In addition Foxley, who is mentioned in the petition was dead by 1324 (CFR 1319-27, p.327).
