Description
Petitioners
Alexander de Bailliolf (Balliol).
Name(s)
de Bailliolf (Balliol), Alexander
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Bailliolf shows that whereas Robert de Higham, who has died, held the manor of Higham by the service of half of a knight's fee from Bailliolf, who in his turn held it by the laws of England of the inheritance of Isabel de Dover, who was Bailliolf's wife, and Isabel's ancestors had the keeping of the manor together with the marriage of Robert's ancestors during any minority up until this time. However, after the death of Robert, the escheator took the manor with Robert's other lands into the king's hands because Robert de Higham at his death held a tenement of the king in Weavering Street by service, though he was not obliged to take away the keeping of the manor and the marriage of Robert de Higham's heir from Bailliolf. The king has delivered the keeping of the same to Bailliolf to be held until Bailliolf's claims can be checked, but this has not been done because of the king's distraction with the Scottish war, so if it pleases the king he requests that the business be examined, and justice be done to Bailliolf so that he is not any longer delayed from his right.
Nature of endorsement
He should have a writ of Chancery to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they view the inquisition returned into Chancery and scrutinize the memoranda of the Exchequer concerning the business, and that they do justice to him.
