Description

Nature of request
The hospital state that they were founded by King Henry I at the same time as the abbey, being endowed with the tithes of the abbey, and with bread and beer from the abbey kitchen forever for which they had a charter from the king by which they enjoyed full seisin. They had this until the time of Abbot Adam who spoke nicely to the inmates so that they showed him their charter which he received and burned, and from then the abbot and his successors detained the tithes to the hospital's disinheritance. The abbey was also endowed with the vill of Brightlingsea from which the hospital received £6 per annum until the current abbot withheld it to the hospitals great damage. Finally, though the king is patron of the hospital, and no brother is to be admitted except with the assent of the inmates, the abbot came with a great number of men to the hospital and demanded their charters, and their common seal, and ordered them to swear an oath of obedience to him, and because brothers Simon de la Neylonde, master of the hospital, and William de Langham refused the abbot removed them from the church and shamefully illtreated them. The abbot's men ejected them from their house and put in a brother who ruined the house against the charters of the king. The inmates, because they are too weak to plead with the abbot request that the king assign his justices to enquire of the veracity of the matter, and that amends be made to them.
