Nature of request
Audinard, late keeper of the works at the Tower of London states that in the enlargement of the ditch next to the Tower towards [the hospital] of St Katherine a great part of the lands which were held by many tenants, who rendered to the hospital 73s. 5d. annual rent were taken for the king, and satisfaction was made to the tenants for the damage to their buildings and their produce then existing in the foundation [of the hospital?] by an inspection of the then mayor and aldermen of London and other selected upright men. The foundation remained by this taking for the king obliged to the hospital of St Katherine for the 73s. 5d. to be annually paid by the king for the foundation of the hospital thus occupied. Audinard states that whilst he was keeper of the works he paid to the keeper and brethren of the hospital 73s. 5d. annually, and had an allowance for the payment in his account rendered in the Exchequer. He further states that by certification of the rolls of account, and by his testimony the keeper and brethren had a writ de Liberate to have the rent after he was dismissed as keeper of the Tower and works.1)
Nature of endorsement
This testimony is not sufficient.2) They should examine the rolls of Chancery for the writ of liberate which they had, and again it should be deferred before the council.
