Description
Petitioners
Brothers and sisters of the hospital of St Katherine without the Tower of London.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The brothers and sisters state that they have lands, houses and rents next to the Tower of London to the amount of 5½ marks and 1d. and more which the king's men have encroached upon by the digging of the ditches around the Tower. The brothers and sisters have received payment for the rent by the king's commandment, and by a writ de Liberate for many years until the 20th year of his reign. They are now not able to have another writ de Liberate unless they can show a letter patent which the guardian of the hospital does not have. The brothers and sisters request that they are not deprived of their rent without compensation, and they state that the truth of the matter can be seen by the suing of the writs de Liberate and the grants, and by the testimony of Giles de Audenard, then constable, and by Ralph de Sandwich, guardian in the king's name of a portion of their tenements.
Nature of endorsement
Richard de Sandwich and Giles de Audenard should be called, and the king should be informed of the reason for the grant and the writ de Liberate.
