Addressees
[Not specified].
Nature of request
Monte Alto complains that the justiciar of Chester unjustly detains his lands of Ewloe which was his inheritance, and of which his father Roger de Monte Alto died seised. Reginald comes and says that the lands are in the cantref of Tegeingl and in the conmote of Coleshill, which were wholly in the hands of the prince of Wales. The lands were forfeited to the king after the death of Llywelyn, prince of Wales, enemy of the king. Monte Alto says that the lands are his inheritance and pertain to his castle of Hawarden and were never held by the princes of Wales, only by purprestures made by them during the minorities of Monte Alto and his ancestors. Referring to an inquisition of 52 Henry III, Monte Alto is to appear before the next parliament, and he is to sue for the inquisition to be produced. If it cannot be found then he is to have a writ to make an inquisition both by Welsh and English if Monte Alto wishes. Monte Alto appears at the parliament after the feast of St Michael, 21 Edward I for an inquisition as the inquisition of Henry III cannot be found. The king grants that an inquisition should be taken, and should be returned at the next parliament after Easter 22 Edward I, and he assigns his justices Reginald de Grey and Robert de Staundon to take the inquisition by the men of the counties of Staffordshire and Lancashire, and from Tegeingl and Maelor Saesneg with Monte Alto's assent. The inquisition is to be held at Flint on 15 February 1294, and meanwhile the sheriffs of Chester, Lancashire and Staffordshire are to empanel juries.
Nature of endorsement
A day is given to Robert de Monte Alto to make his appearance in the presence of the council of the king at Westminster on the quindene of Easter.
