Petition against the introduction of civil marriages in St. Lucia; Dix's interpretation of the petition; He reports that 2524 names were obtained for the petition out of a total Roman Catholic population of 29,592, and 1751 out of the 2542 names were represented by the marks of the person. He therefore argues that the majority of Roman Catholics are in favour of civil marriages. Petition is included in the despatch. Includes persons such as: Mr LaCaze, Chairman of the Vestry of Castries; various members of the Vestry; Alex Clavier; Amélina Gustave; Justin Gabriel; Louis Gabriel; Herman Mes's [sic]; Louis Jule's [sic]; Joseph Jacques Ferdinand; George Moise; Josephine Joseph; Gilbert Pascal; Maria Louise; Nelson Noël; Emanuel Modesto; Jules Emilie; and many others.
