Letter from Chief Justice Armstrong in support of the new Civil Code; copies of some communications from the unofficial members of council on the subject [Mr Fleming, , Mr Weeks, Mr Goodman, Mr Lloyd, and Mr Moffat]. Armstrong states 'No true Roman Catholic would go before the Registrar. But by what right in this British Colony can we prevent our own fellow subjects, Hindoos, and Mahommedans from getting legally married? I cannot believe that any one at all acquainted with British legislation would seriously propose that there should be one law for those who believe in God only, one for heathens and one for Christians.' See CO321/12/50, 12993/1876.
