Chesterfield to Cumberland: the king, although he notes Saxe's comments on Spain, the duke of Modena and Genoa, does not consider them detailed enough, and Chesterfield encloses a paper with the king's thoughts on the subject. It would not be proper to reject the overture outright. The king requires an account of the strengths of the allied and enemy armies, and Cumberland's opinion on whether he can defend Bergen op Zoom, Breda, 's-Hertogenbosch and Maastricht. Chesterfield encloses a copy of a letter to him from the prince of Orange, and his response. Cumberland is to use his discretion on the prince's request for protection against Lowendahl. He encloses a letter under flying seal to Robinson in Vienna. Dated (OS) at Whitehall. ff. 29-32
