Report of Edward[?] Ellison on William Miller, convicted (with Valentine Gadsby) at the Michaelmas Lincolnshire Quarter Sessions at Gainsborough in 1790, for stealing lead from Lincoln Cathedral Church. Evidences supplied by George Smith, son of James Smith; James Smith, plumber to the Cathedral; John Towns, journeyman to James Smith; John Welborne, constable of the Close; Thomas Stones, mason at Lincoln; Mr Stennitt and Joseph Ball and the prisoner. There is also an account of the trial. Ellison apologies for the lateness of his reply, the letter from the Home Office being sent to Lincoln instead of the Division of Lindsey had delayed his receiving it. The local magistrates believe that both prisoners were old offenders. Grounds for clemency: youth (17 years) and previous good character. Initial sentence: transportation. Recommendation: no mercy.
Folios 486-490.
